Add each wall's width and height to get the total square footage of your walls, in square feet and square metres. Doors and windows are taken off automatically. Use the result to plan acoustic panels, paint, wallpaper or wall panels.
How to calculate the square footage of a wall
Multiply the width of the wall by its height. A wall 12 ft wide and 8 ft high is 12 × 8 = 96 sq ft.
For a whole room, add the walls together. A 12 × 10 ft room with an 8 ft ceiling has (12 + 10 + 12 + 10) × 8 = 352 sq ft of wall.
Taking off doors and windows
Subtract the openings you will not cover. The calculator uses 21 sq ft for a standard door (3 × 7 ft) and 15 sq ft for a typical window. For a large window or patio door, measure it and add it as a separate subtraction by lowering the wall width.
Square feet and square metres
1 square metre is 10.764 square feet. To convert square feet to square metres, multiply by 0.0929. Switch the calculator to metres if you measured in metres; it converts the result both ways.
How much of the wall do acoustic panels need to cover?
Acoustic panels do not need to cover the whole wall. Acoustic treatment guides commonly suggest:
- Living room or bedroom: about 15 to 20% of the wall area
- Home office or gaming room: about 20 to 25%
- Podcast booth or home studio: about 25 to 40%, focused around the microphone and speakers

Tips for measuring
- Measure each wall at floor level from corner to corner.
- Measure ceiling height in at least two places; older rooms are not always level.
- Round up to the nearest half foot. It is better to have a little spare.
